Sewer Department

The Sewer charges for the first half of the year 2000 (January - June), were billed in July with a commitment of $302,610.58 with 1237 users in the system.  The second half of the year (July - December) was billed with a commitment of $331,536.35 with 1250 users.

Total Sewer charges for calendar year 2002 was $634,146.93.

Motor Vehicles

This year 7,196 registrations were issued.  Excise tax collected was $824,360.26, an increase of $5,451.88 from 2001 ($818,908.38).  Agent fees collected were $22,568.00.

We also collected $6,286.00 in Police Department Parking tickets.

Fish and Wildlife

Our office processed 467 registrations for boats with $9,354.80 in excise tax collected.

Inland Fisheries & Wildlife has also implemented a new program for fresh waters in Maine.  Beginning January 1, 2002, all motorized watercraft on inland waters must display a Lake and River Protection Sticker.  These stickers are available in our office and are $10 for residents and $20 for non-residents.

449 registrations were issued for ATVs and Snowmobiles.

A total of $1,304.00 in agent fees was collected for Fish and Wildlife registrations.

Real Estate Taxes

On July 26, 2002, 187 liens were placed for the 2001 Real Estate Taxes, with a foreclosure date of January 26, 2004.  One (1) piece of property was foreclosed on for 1999 real estate taxes.

On September 11, 2002, $9,727,209.80 was committed to me for collection by the Assessor, an increase of $654,031.76 over last year.  $8,711,436.80 for Real Estate and $1,015,773.00 for Personal Property.  There are 3970 accounts; 126 are 100% exempt, leaving 3,877 taxable accounts.

As of December 31, 2002, 91% of commitment has been collected.

The tax mil rate increased from $21.30 to $22.00 this year.  The interest rate, which is set by the State, decreased from 11.5% to 8.75%.

Seven (7) old past due Personal Property accounts were turned over to the City Attorney to proceed with

civil action, as per the new policy approved by the City Council in 2001.
